Marindinin, also known as 7,8-dihydrokavain, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as kavalactones. These are lactones, which is structurally characterized by a benzene ring and a pyranone moiety, linked to each other to form a 4-methoxy-6-(2-phenylethyl)-2H-pyran-2-one skeleton. Marindinin is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Outside of the human body, Marindinin has been detected, but not quantified in, beverages. This could make marindinin a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. Found in the roots of kava (Piper methysticum).
