Rutaecarpine, also known as rhetine, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as beta carbolines. Beta carbolines are compounds containing a 9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole moiety. These are compounds containing a pyridopyrimidine, which consists of a pyridine fused to a pyrimidine. Rutaecarpine is a moderately basic compound (based on its pKa).
