Liriodendrin, also known as eleutheroside e, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as lignan glycosides. These are aromatic polycyclic compounds containing a carbohydrate component glycosidically linked to a lignan moiety. They include 1-aryltetralin lactones. Liriodendrin is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Liriodendrin is an antiarrhythmic lignan isolated from Pittosporum. Outside of the human body, Liriodendrin has been detected, but not quantified in, tea. This could make liriodendrin a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods.
